In my last post, I asked if, as adults, we lose our creativity. I propose that it’s not gone, but rather suppressed by the demands of adulthood and society.

But, exactly what is “Creativity”. Is it so elusive or something that artists alone are given?

Creativity is simply the ability to generate new ideas, solutions, or expressions. It involves thinking in original ways, making connections between what may seem like unrelated concepts, and producing something new or innovative. It is not limited to artistic pursuits; it can manifest in various pursuits, including science, technology, business, and everyday problem-solving.

As we talk about Creativity, we can look at some key aspects.  These include:

  • Originality: Creative ideas are often characterized by their uniqueness and novelty.
  • Flexibility: Creative individuals can adapt their thinking and approach to different situations. They are open to thinking outside the box.
  • Brainstorming: Creativity involves the ability to generate a multitude of ideas or solutions. Brainstorming is a wonderful creative exercise.
  • Development: Individuals with creativity can develop and build upon those ideas that were generate adding detail to bring them to life..
  • Problem-Solving: Creative thinking can lead to innovative solutions and problem-solving.
  • Imagination: Creativity is closely linked to imagination—the ability to envision things that don’t currently exist. Imagination allows individuals to visualize new possibilities and worlds.
  • Risk-Taking: Creativity often involves taking risks and stepping outside of one’s comfort zone. It requires the willingness to experiment and the fail.

Creativity is a complex skill that can be expressed in countless ways. Its value is that it contributes to innovation, personal growth, and the advancement of a variety of disciplines.  Please take note that I said it is a “skill”.  Creativity, as a skill, can be developed and improved the more it is practiced.

In this blog series we’ll look further into creativity, it’s benefits to our health and lives, how to overcome creative blocks, and pursuing one’s own creative journey.
