Mixed Media Abstract painted while at play

Where does our creativity go when we become adults? While it’s true that some individuals may experience a decline in certain aspects of creativity, such as the ability to generate a variety of ideas, there are various factors at play (no pun intended). Here are a few reasons why some people might feel they lose creativity as adults.

  1. Social Conditioning: Societal expectations and norms often emphasize practicality, productivity, and conformity. As individuals grow older, they may internalize these values and perceive imaginative or unconventional thinking as less valuable or acceptable.

  2. Fear of Failure: With age comes an increased awareness of consequences and a fear of failure. This fear can inhibit risk-taking and experimentation, key components of a creative mindset.

  3. Routine and Habit: Adults often settle into routines and habits, which can be conducive to efficiency but may limit exposure to new experiences or perspectives that can fuel creativity.

  4. Stress and Pressure: Adult life is often associated with increased responsibilities and stress. High levels of stress can hinder creative thinking by narrowing focus and promoting more rigid problem-solving approaches.

  5. Educational System: Traditional education systems often emphasize convergent thinking, where there is a single correct answer to a problem. This focus may discourage the kind of open-ended thinking associated with creativity.

  6. Lack of Play: Play is a natural way to foster creativity, and as adults, individuals may engage in play less frequently. Playful activities can stimulate creativity by encouraging experimentation and exploration.

  7. Fixed Mindset: Some individuals develop a fixed mindset, believing that their abilities and intelligence are fixed traits. This mindset can limit the willingness to take on challenges that may require creative thinking.

It should be noted that creativity is not an all-or-nothing trait and can be nurtured through intentional practices, such as engaging in diverse experiences, fostering a growth mindset, embracing curiosity, and incorporating playful and imaginative activities into daily life. The idea that creativity declines universally with age is a stereotype, and individuals can actively cultivate and sustain their creative abilities.

I plan on exploring creativity, art, and our self-expression more in this blog. Sometimes, I might have pieces I’ve created while “at play” (like the one above). What is your opinion on creativity in adulthood? Let me know in the comments.

At CRE828, I foster that creative spirit in each individual through a variety of workshops. These workshops are offered in small, semiprivate and even private classes, so you’ll be comfortable exploring new mediums and playing. Yes, I said the “P” word!
